In October 2011, Vernazza was hit by a very strong storm which caused mudslides and a sudden flood, covering Vernazza’s Via Roma in mud that was as deep as 12 feet.
The Chapel of Santa Marta, a small but tough stone chapel on Vernazza’s Via Roma, managed to stay standing despite the powerful water. Nowadays, visitors can light a candle for Saint Martha at her chapel. On certain special Sundays, they can even go to a church service there.
