Nestled in the heart of the Roman city of Bath lies the Thermae Bath Spa. This modern wellness centre with rich historical practices is most definitely one of the top things to do in Bath – let me show you why!
“In the World Heritage city of Bath you can enjoy Britain’s only natural thermal waters, as the Celts & Romans did over 2,000 years ago.”
Thermae Bath Spa
In the times of the Ancient Romans, Bath was termed ‘Aque Sulis’, or ‘the waters of Sulis’. The province was centered around the thermal waters that sprung up from natural hot springs beneath the city.
Containing over 40 natural minerals, these waters were considered sacred and bathing in them was an essential part of staying healthy. Clientele ranged from soldiers using the waters to heal their wounds, to the wealthy aristocrats having a dip as part of their luxurious lifestyles.
While you can visit the ancient spa and quite literally walk in the footsteps of the Romans, the Thermae Bath Spa allows you to experience the healing powers of these warm waters for yourself. This is all while admiring the views over the city from their stunning rooftop pool, what’s to lose?

“Bath and its waters have a long association with well-being and the word SPA is related to the Latin phrase ‘Salus Per Aquam’ or ‘health through water’.”
Thermae Bath Spa
We were recently invited to go and try out the facilities on a warm Friday morning before they opened to the general public to get a real sense of the relaxing atmosphere and peaceful sounds of the sleepy city.
During our visit the wellness centre had not yet reopened post the ‘p-word’. However, the rooftop and Minerva pools were open for us to enjoy.
It’s worth re-iterating here that these are not your run of the mill standard chlorinated swimming pools, far from it!
The waters used are gathered from the nearby Mendip hills over the course of around 10,000 years. Following which, they are then cooled to a more comfortable bathing temperature at 34 degrees.
We started our morning up on the rooftop pool taking in the breathtaking views of the city. Luckily, we also had our drone for us and with special permission from Bath Film Office and the spa we were able to take some wonderful shots which you can check out in my YouTube video below.
The pool not only has stunning views, but also a built-in Jacuzzi for you to sit and watch the world go by. Or, pop on your complimentary robe and slippers and have a walk around the terrace for some elegant people watching!
We then slowly made our way down to the Minerva Bath. This uses the same mineral-rich waters, with the added bonuses of a lazy river and some floats for you to use.

A big thank you to the Thermae Bath Spa team for inviting us down!
