Do you have only one day in Rome? Are you visiting Rome from the Civitavecchia cruise port, with just a few hours to explore the city? Do you want to cover all the major attractions the city has to offer?
Now let’s be honest, one day in Rome is definitely not enough to see absolutely everything the city has to offer. There are so many secret gems all around the city and even the popular touristic spots are way more than most other cities in my experience. BUT with this itinerary, you can cover major ground in one day too.
So that being said, all you’ll need to do is put on your most comfortable shoes, carry along your optimistic spirit and let’s go explore Italy’s capital in one day!
Rome in One Day: Unmissable Spots
Following this itinerary, you’ll be able to visit several of Rome’s most iconic landmarks, including:
- The Colosseum: The largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, this symbol of Rome once hosted gladiatorial contests and public spectacles (note this itinerary will only see the Colosseum from the outside).
- The Pyramid of Cestius: A lesser-known but fascinating pyramid that was built as a tomb for a wealthy Roman magistrate, it’s also older than the Colosseum by about 100 years!
- Piazza Venezia: A bustling central square in Rome, known for its imposing Vittoriano monument and as the heart of the city’s historical and political life.
- Aventine Hill: Enjoy the serene Orange Tree Garden with fantastic views.
- Trastevere: My favourite area of Rome, a vibrant neighbourhood known for its lively atmosphere.
- Janiculum Hill: Offers breathtaking panoramic views of Rome from the splendid Fontanone.
- Trevi Fountain: The largest Baroque fountain in Rome, where tradition says that tossing a coin over your shoulder into the fountain will ensure your return to Rome.
- Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola: A stunning baroque church with an impressive ceiling fresco.
- Pantheon: An ancient temple that has been in continuous use throughout its history, now functioning as a church (again, we’ll just be seeing this from the outside).
- Campo dei Fiori: A vibrant historic market square.
- Jewish Quarter: Known for its rich history and unique Roman-Jewish fusion cuisine.

One Day in Rome Itinerary
8am – Breakfast at Caffè Doria
Before embarking on your Vespa tour, fuel up with a delicious Roman breakfast at Caffè Doria, conveniently located near Piazza Venezia. Known for its excellent coffee and pastries, Caffè Doria is the perfect place to start your day. Try a cappuccino paired with a cornetto (an Italian croissant) for a traditional Italian breakfast experience.
9am – Explore the Streets with a Vespa Experience
Start your day with the quintessential Roman experience: a Vespa tour. There’s no better way to see Rome than from the back of this iconic scooter. Not only will you cover more ground than on foot, but you’ll also get a unique perspective of the city’s most famous and hidden spots. The tour we did was also adorable because you get to sit in the little sidecar as you’re driven around Rome! If there’s two of you, one person will sit on the Vespa with the driver and one will go to the sidecar.

OPTIONAL – Roman Forum
So here’s the thing, during our stay in Rome we did go inside the Colosseum and honestly? I was a bit disappointed. It was overcrowded and just really not that impressive compared to the outside.
One place I did love though was the Roman Forum which you can spend about an hour wandering around the impressive ruins and heading up to the viewpoint.
I’m leaving this very much up to you, either include it and have a very busy day of sightseeing or leave it out and spend more time wandering around and soaking in the city.
Be sure to buy the tickets in advance. If you’re in Rome for longer and are interested in seeing more archeological sites you can buy tickets from the Colosseum website here. Althernatively you can just purchase individual site tickets in person from the official ticket offices which you can find in the image below.
