Lombok rewards travellers with pristine white-sand coves, epic surf breaks, and volcanic and sweeping views that still feel untouched. Often overlooked by nearby Bali, the vibe here is slower, calmer, and refreshingly crowd-free.
Kuta makes the perfect base for exploring the island’s southern coastline. You’ll find chilled cafes, plenty of scooter rentals, and easy access to dreamy day trips. From rolling hills that meet the ocean to hidden bays perfect for swimming, this region of the island is pure magic.
This Lombok travel guide is packed with the top things to do in Lombok – from surf lessons and paddleboarding in calm bays to chasing waterfalls and feasting at local warungs that specialise in traditional Sasak cuisine. Consider it your starting point for planning the ultimate relaxing yet adventurous island-hopping getaway!
How To Get Around Lombok
Renting a scooter is by far the best way to explore the island. Most rental shops in Kuta offer daily rentals for around £3-5, and I recommend Tara Scooter Rental for reliable bikes and friendly service.
They’re open every day from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
With a scooter, you can zip between beaches, hills, small villages, and all the best places to visit in Lombok at your own pace for a super affordable rate.
Where To Stay in Lombok
Villa Namu is a stylish and super comfortable option, right in the heart of Kuta. It’s close to everything in town while still being quiet enough for a restful escape.
Think modern, chic interiors and a private pool (respite from the humidity!). This villa is the perfect place to unwind after surfing or scooting around Lombok.

5 Things To Do in Lombok, Indonesia
1. Selong Belanak Beach
Located in a wide bay just east of Kuta, Selong Belanak Beach is one of the best spots for swimming and for beginner surfers. It’s a long stretch of white sand with loungers and restaurants nearby.
Surf schools offer lessons right on the beach, making it easy to try your first waves. There are also small warungs serving fresh coconut water and snacks.
Head to this beach at sunset, and sometimes you can see water buffalo strolling along the edge of the water!

2. Tampah Beach
One of my favourite Lombok hidden gems, Tampah Beach, is an absolutely stunning white beach with crystal clear water.
Despite it being a brilliant snorkel spot close to Kuta, there was barely anyone else around. Bring your own snorkel gear (or rent it) to explore the rocky outcrops teeming with small fish.

3. Go Diving
One of the best things to do in Lombok, particularly on the south coast, is to go scuba diving or snorkelling. There are some fantastic dive sites with no crowds.
Consider booking a day trip to the secret Gilis – the islands of Layar, Rengit, Nanggu, Tangkong, and Kedis. These untouched islets are home to turtles and vibrant reef life.
Most tours include lunch and pickup from your hotel or villa. Early morning trips are ideal for calmer waters and better visibility, especially if you want to spot turtles.

4. Bukit Merese Hike
Bukit Merese offers panoramic views of Lombok’s southern coastline and is one of the easiest hikes on the island. The short climb up the hill takes around 20–30 minutes, making it perfect for witnessing epic coastal views, especially at golden hour when the sun sets over the water.
There’s no official pass required, and the trail is well-marked.
5. Overnight Breaks from Kuta, Lombok
Gili Air
Gili Air is your go-to spot for the quintessential chill island life – turtles, no traffic, and the dreamiest sunsets. Spend the day snorkelling the reef, lounging in beachside swings, and watching the sky turn pink. It’s a peaceful overnight escape that deserves a spot in any Lombok travel guide.
From Kuta, take a taxi (about 1.5–2 hours) to Bangsal or Teluk Nare harbour, then a 15–25 minute boat ride brings you straight to this island paradise.

Northern Lombok/Mount Rinjani
This is where to go in Lombok for adventure. Trekking Mount Rinjani, the second-highest volcano in Indonesia at 12,224 ft, is the highlight – whether it’s a summit trek or a shorter panorama tour. The crater lake and rim views are unforgettable.
I recommend booking your tour through Rinjani Conservation because they’re great! Reference my name (Alicia) if you contact them.
From Kuta, it’s about a 3 to 3.5-hour drive to Senaru, the main trailhead. Don’t forget to check if you need to buy separate park permits with your tour guide.

Other Places To Go in Lombok
- Pantai Labuan Kesambik: Striking black sand beach, quiet and uncrowded, perfect for sunset photos when you visit Lombok. Bring water shoes if you want to explore the rocky areas at low tide.
- Tangsi Beach: Pink beach with soft sand and calm waters, one of the most popular attractions in Lombok. Small entrance fee. The walk down from the parking area takes about 10 minutes but rewards you with an almost-private shoreline.
- Tanjung Aan Beach: Gorgeous turquoise bay, great for swimming, lounging under umbrellas, or grabbing coconuts from local stalls. Try renting a stand-up paddleboard for fun on the gentle waves.
- Tiu Kelep Waterfall: Iconic jungle waterfall near Senaru, with a scenic trek to reach it. Entrance fee required. The trek takes around 45 minutes through lush rainforest and offers multiple photo spots along the way.
- Sendang Gile Waterfall: One of Lombok’s most beautiful waterfalls. You can combine this with Tiu Kelep for a full-day northern Lombok adventure.
- Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls: Twin cascades tucked in lush forest, often visited together. The entrance pass covers both. Benang Kelambu is especially photogenic with water streaming through narrow rock crevices.

- Cantina Mexicana: Great spot for tacos, nachos, margaritas, and fun evenings.
- Pawon Nusantara: The best beef rendang I’ve ever had – truly the best of Lombok dining.
- Loka: Healthy eats, smoothie bowls, post-surf bites, and a solid gym on-site.
Best Time of Year to Visit Lombok
The best time to visit Lombok is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. Expect warm, sunny days with temperatures around 27–32°C (80–90°F). Perfect for beaches, trekking, and exploring Lombok’s waterfalls!
The wet season falls between November and March, bringing heavy showers, high humidity, and occasional storms, though temperatures stay similar at 26–31°C (79–88°F).
Shoulder months like April and October are generally drier but can have sporadic rain. Overall, plan your trip in the dry months for the best beach days, hiking conditions, and sunsets. If you’re a digital nomad and have more time to spare, you can risk a few rainy days and enjoy fewer crowds.
How Long To Spend in Lombok
For most travellers, 3–5 days is enough to explore Lombok’s highlights, like Kuta’s beaches, waterfalls, and a day trip to Gili Air. However, spending a full week allows a more relaxed pace: sunrise hikes at Bukit Selong, trekking Mount Rinjani or booking a panorama tour, and discovering hidden bays without feeling rushed.
Extra days also let you enjoy Lombok’s local culture, markets, and warungs.
