Staying connected is an essential part of travelling, but the worry of having to figure out how to get a physical SIM when you travel is less than ideal. Enter eSIMs – the revolutionary tech that redefines the way you experience mobile connectivity on your jet-setting journeys. As a traveller, you need a reliable, flexible, and hassle-free solution to stay connected anywhere, anytime. In this post, let’s dive into the world of eSIMs, exploring their travel-friendly perks, compatibility checks for your phone, and the top eSIM providers.

What are eSIMs?
eSIM, short for “embedded Subscriber Identity Module,” is a digital SIM card that is directly integrated into a compatible device’s hardware. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, eSIMs eliminate the need for a physical swap when switching carriers or acquiring a new plan. Instead, users can activate, switch, or manage their mobile plans directly through the device’s settings.
Admittedly, it wasn’t until fairly recently that I learned bout eSIMs. We were travelling through Italy when I got a notification saying I’d used up all my EU data allowance for the month (with no possible way to top it up). It was here I started looking at options such as local SIM cards when I stumbled upon an article about eSIMs.
After conducting a fair bit of research I bought my first eSIM plan with Airalo, and now I’m a convert! Everywhere I travel I’ll purchase an eSIM plan and they’ve never let me down.

Why Should You Use eSIMs?
- Convenience: With eSIMs, you no longer need to carry multiple physical SIM cards or worry about losing or damaging them. Switching between carriers or adding data plans while traveling becomes hassle-free, as it can be done remotely through the device’s settings.
- Flexibility: eSIMs offer unmatched flexibility in managing your mobile plans. You can have multiple eSIM profiles on one device, ideal for maintaining separate work and personal phone lines or using local plans while abroad without the need for a physical SIM card.
- Environmentally Friendly: As eSIMs eliminate the need for plastic SIM cards and packaging, they contribute to reducing electronic waste and are more eco-friendly.
- Traveller’s Best Friend: For frequent travellers, eSIMs are a game-changer. You can switch to local carriers seamlessly without having to find and purchase a physical SIM card in a foreign country.
- Faster Activation: Activating an eSIM is a quick and straightforward process, saving you time and avoiding the need to visit physical stores for activation.
Cons of eSIM plans
The major con to the eSIM plans like those listed below is that they are data only, meaning you wont have a number to make phone calls etc. Now to be honest I haven’t found this to be much of an issue, but it’s worth knowing.

How to Check if Your Phone is Compatible with eSIM?
Before diving into the world of eSIMs, it’s essential to check if your device supports this technology. Most modern smartphones, smartwatches, and tablets offer eSIM compatibility. Here’s how to check if your phone supports eSIM:
- Device Settings: Navigate to your device’s settings and look for the “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” section. If your device supports eSIM, you should find an option to “Add Cellular Plan.”
- Manufacturer’s Website: Check the manufacturer’s official website for information on eSIM compatibility for your specific device model.
- Carrier Support: Verify if your mobile carrier provides eSIM services and supports your device. Carrier websites often have lists of compatible devices.
IMEI method
iPhone: head to Settings and then About where you will find your phone’s IMEI number. If the phone supports eSIM, there will be two IMEI numbers listed, one’s for a Physical SIM and one’s for a Digital SIM.
Android – Dial *#06# and your IMEI information should appear. As above, if it’s eSIM enabled, you’ll see more than one IMEI number listed.
